More Club History

A note from an old friend.....

Hello, I am happy to have found your website. I read with interest your Club History section. I believe I am one of the 2 people that moved from Boise to found what may be today, Northwest British Classics. I'll give you the story as I remember it: Myself and a gentleman named Grady Myers were members of a club called European Touring Classics in Boise. Any interesting European car was accepted. The club was actually dominated by Morgan owners! I purchased a 1965 Triumph TR4A in 1982 and joined the club. Imagine my suprise at the first driving tour when 5 Morgans, 2 MGTD's and a Bugatti replica showed up. I felt like I had a pretty common car. The group was very welcoming to a 19 year old, wet behind the ears British car owner. I served as President of European Touring Classics 2 years later as a now 'veteran' British Car owner. Boise European Touring Classics member Bob Adair was recently featured in British Car Magazine upon the completion of his 1952 Flat Rad Morgan restoration. Grady Myers moved to Spokane in 1983 or 1984. He was a cartoonist for the Idaho Statesman newspaper and began working for the Spokane Chronicle. I moved to Spokane in 1985 accepting a job with a local Portrait Studio. I contacted Grady, who now owned a 1934 Morgan Family Model 3 Wheeler (Morgans again!). We discovered that no marque club existed except for the Inland Empire MG Club. We met two of their members, Paul King and Bob Hughes. Somewhere in our discussions the idea of re-creating European Touring Classics in the Inland Empire area came up. We decided to do exactly that and the club was formed sometime in 1986. We placed cards on interesting cars all over the area as we came across them and began participating in events including driving tours, rallies and shows. We had about a dozen active members the first year. The Triumph Owners and Drivers Club mentioned on your history page was formed within the Boise European Touring Classics club just as I was leaving. Ralph McAdams and Pete Rolfe were the founding members. We never used the TOAD name in Spokane when I was there. George Gillhoover from Hayden Lake ID was another very active member of our Spokane club. He owned a large number of Triumphs. I do not recall other members names. I left Spokane in 1987 to pursue my career in the Tri-Cities area. I continued to corresespond with Grady for a couple of years but eventually lost track. I understand he was working on a Series 1 Sunbeam Alpine and had moved to Post Falls ID. I have no knowledge of the club after 1987. I acquired a 1962 TR4 race car with a significant competition history in 1990. 11 years later the car still awaits restoration. I subsequently moved to Vancouver WA and then Southern California. I currently reside in Bakersfield CA, a member of the Bakersfield British Car Club (No Morgans!)and the Friends of Triumph racing club. I still have both cars. I acquired a wife in 1982, a daughter in 1983, sons in 1984 and 1986 and still have all of them! Please say hello to Grady, Paul, Bob and George if any of them are still active. I hope this information is of value.

Thanks, Brad Eells, Bakersfield CA
